What is Chiropractic?
Chiropractic is a healthcare profession that focuses on diagnosis, treatment, and prevention of mechanical disorders of the musculo-skeletal system, with special emphasis on the spine. It emphasizes manual therapy including spinal manipulation and other joint and soft-tissue manipulation as well as exercises and health and lifestyle advice.
Chiropractors locate and treat painful and dysfunctional joints and muscle and ligament problems which can often lead to pain, discomfort, pins and needles or numbness. Using hands or equipment these joints are “adjusted” to restore movement and function.
In the UK only those who have trained at a recognised college and who are registered with the General Chiropractic Council may call themselves a Chiropractor.
What do Chiropractors treat?
Chiropractors treat aches, pains and dysfunction related to the musculo-skeletal system. Treatment can be tailored to your specific problem, allowing your body to return to normal function. Once you are free from pain your chiropractor may suggest a regieme of exercises to maintain health and reduce the chance of re-occurence. Common conditions that can be treated include:-
- lower back pain,
- neck pain, shoulder pain,
- hip pain, knee pain,
- joint and muscle pain,
- headache arising from the neck
- arthritic pain.
How does it work?
In order to restore movement to the joints they may be “adjusted”, which often requires a quick thrust or pull, frequently producing an audible “crack”. If such an adjustment is not suitable your chiropractor may use equipment or mobilisation techniques to achieve this movement. Tight muscles around the affected area may also be released through specific massage techniques such as “trigger point therapy” where pressure is applied to tight and painful areas in muscles to help them relax. The treatment may also involve heat or cold application and specific exercises depending on the problem diagnosed.
Does it hurt?
Chiro practic treatment does not normally hurt, however it is common to feel achy the day after treatment which usually passes quickly for most people. Although it is common to hear an audible “crack” after an adjustment, it rarely hurts. The sound is produced from gas bubbles popping as the pressure is released within the joint.
What happens during my first visit?
A full case history is taken followed by a thorough orthopaedic and neurological examination, checking the nerves, joints and muscles. Your diagnosis and treatment plan will then be explained and you will have the opportunity to ask any questions. Your first treatment will usually follow this discussion.
