Osteopathy is a system of diagnosis and treatment for a wide range of musculo-skeletal conditions. It works with the structure and function of the body, and is based on the principle that the well-being of an individual depends on the skeleton, muscles, ligaments and connective tissues functioning smoothly together.
In the UK, Osteopath’s must study for four to five years in order to register with the General Osteopathic Council, and only those registered with the General Osteopathic Council may call themselves an Osteopath.
What can Osteopathy treat?
Osteopathy is used to treat aches, pains and dysfunction related to the musculo-skeletal system. Treatment can be tailored to your specific problem, allowing your body to return to normal function. Common conditions that can be treated include:-
- low back pain
- neck pain or stiffness
- upper back pain or stiffness
- shoulder problems
- hip and knee pain
- workplace strains
- general aches and pains
How Osteopathy treatment works.
People choose to see an Osteopath for a variety of reasons. They may have pain or restricted movement. They may have sports injuries or they may simply want to improve their posture and be more active.
Osteopaths use a broad range of hands on measures during treatment; including soft tissue techniques, stretching, mobilisation and manipulation of joints. What techniques are used in your treatment is dependent on your age, fitness and diagnosis.
What’s the difference between Osteopathy and Chiropractic?
Osteopathy and Chiropractic can be seen as two very similar disciplines in that they both treat musculo-skeletal complaints and both aim to improve musculo-skeletal function and hence general health and wellbeing overall.
The nature of practice and techniques used can differ between osteopaths and chiropractors, although they often use very similar techniques.
